Mint and Stripes

Look of the Day

I'm behind on this very on trend fashion website. Polyvore is an amazing fashion and design site that allows you to browse and create collages of looks you love. It is a fun way to explore, style and share. I'll use Polyvore to share with you some of my favorite looks and outfits each week. Let me know what you think of the site.

This week, I'm loving the mint jeans with a simple striped t-shirt and navy blazer.  These pieces can all be worn in so many different ways, so they will be wardrobe staples for many years. Don't forget the amazing Tory Burch wedges to finish off your look! Happy Shopping!

Cannes You Say Pretty

It's very hard to choose, but I think these are my two favorite gowns from Cannes. Eva and Diane stole the show in these whimsical fairy tale princess gowns. Love, love love!

Dessert Fix

So tonight, Jordan made an AMAZING dinner! It was a great twist on a recipe from Men's Health featuring tilapia, swiss chard, apples and a mysterious and delicious bacon and dijon mustard sauce served over couscous. YUM.MY.

We had a lovely meal, and I was quite ready to settle in for a romantic night of Toy Story 3...by the way, watch it, you'll like it, trust me. However, Jordan, despite making a beautiful meal for us, was not satisfied. At 9:45pm, he decided we must stop the movie, get in the car, drive to the store, purchase a piece of cake, drive home, put the cake on a plate, start the movie, and eat the cake. What? I'm sorry, but we were right in the thick of the plot. So, I told him we could make do with what we have at home. He said we didn't have anything, and I accepted his challenge...and won.

Very easy cobbler recipe:

Ingredients:
1/2 cup Blueberries (fresh or frozen) * I used frozen.
1/2 cup Sugar
1/2 tsp. Vanilla
1 cup Bisquick
1/2 stick Butter, softened
1/2 cup milk

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350
Fill ramekins 1/2 full with blueberries
Mix sugar, vanilla, Bisquick, butter and milk together.
Spoon mixture over berries, bake for 25 minutes

This made three ramekins of cobbler, or you could use a small baking dish.

Thank you, Jordan, for challenging me to bake a dessert with what we have at home. We will now have a serious talk about your dessert habits before your cake runs and my late night baking take a turn for the worse. If we don't stop the madness, it will be the end of my waistline. But it was a good cobbler...

Have A Little Faith

These are all the rage in the coolest college town in the USA. Traci lives there, so of course she has double the cool. She texted me her latest wrist candy from Athens, GA. I'm liking the look. She got the red one at a super cute boutique called Cheeky Peach, in Athens. The other was a gift; it's made by Betsy Pittard Designs. Great gift idea! Thanks for the inspiration, Trace!

Beer Meets Lemonade, And They Love Each Other

Raspberry Beer Cocktail

My sweet friend, Sarah, first introduced this to me in Boston as "redneck lemonade". And I'll be derned (yes, derned), it is GOOD! Sarah and I made it tailgate style for an outdoor Tim McGraw concert, but you could also serve it for a poolside soiree or luncheon. It is a lovely Southern Living Recipe for a delightfully fizzy summer beverage. Thank you, Sarah, for introducing me!

  • Ingredients:
  • 3/4 cup frozen raspberries
  • 3 1/2 (12-oz.) bottles beer, chilled
  • 1 (12-oz.) container frozen raspberry lemonade concentrate, thawed
  • 1/2 cup vodka
  • Garnish: lemon and lime slices

Let's Hit The Barre!

It seems that ballerinas were on to something a very long time ago, and now we've figured out their secret. The more time you spend at the barre, the better your buns look. Aha! You sneaky dancers with your slender and toned arms, shoulders, waist, abs, butt, thighs and calves. The masses have figured you out and in no time, we'll all look just as good as you do.

Well, we'll see about that.  But seriously, dancers go through intense technique training at the ballet barre. The exercises lengthen and strengthen muscles, and improve posture and balance. Thankfully for those of us who are past our prima ballerina primes, a few fitness gurus have figured out how to translate barre work from Center Stage standards to something more attainable. Many dance studios and gyms offer barre classes...leotard and tights may or may not be required. Also check out Pure Barre for a ballet barre focused workout.

Tribal Dance

"What good is a tribal moment without layers and layers of global-inspired jewelry? You know what I say. More is more and less is a bore!"  - Ken Downing, Senior Vice President and Fashion Director of Neiman Marcus

The tribal trend is all about excess. Check out a video of Ken Downing's take on the trend here.

Fro Yo vs. Cupcakes

Both yummy treats have been around forever. Who didn't make cupcakes for a bake sale back in the day (Funfetti anyone?), or get pumped up for TCBY after school in the 90s? It's not like either treat ever had a bad rep, but the 2000s have brought mega makeovers for these sweet treats.

Cupcakeries have popped up across the country, take the starring role on a few reality tv shows, and cupcakes have even replaced the wedding cake at many weddings in the 2000s.

Gigi's cupcakes in Athens, GA.  Find a Gigi's near you here

One of the original cupcakeries; Magnolia Bakery in NYC. Now you can order them online, click here to have them shipped to you. Did I mention my birthday is coming up??

So cupcakes were having a moment, but while they were basking in the glory of their new found makeover popularity, a cold and yummy dark horse made a comeback in a big way. Welcome to the new you, frozen yogurt! In case you haven't noticed, you can score a bucket sized portion of serve yourself frozen yogurt on pretty much any street corner these days. You can even put fruit on top to make yourself feel better about the bucket of yogurt you are consuming.  I'll be honest, I'm smitten by the new and improved yogurt shop experience.

Post Pinkberry pitstop at The Prudential Center in Boston.  If you're looking for some fro yo pampering, they still serve you at Pinkberry :)

Yoforia is a self serve fro yo heaven. There is one in the South Park Mall in Charlotte, where I'll will probably be snacking later today. Find one near you here

I don't know if a winner can be declared between cupcakes and frozen yogurt, but they have both made the ultimate comeback. What will be the next dessert comeback kid?

Message in a Necklace

Dogeared Jewelry

I love these necklaces.  They are so simple, but so amazing. The Dogeared mantra is "Spreading good energy, one jewel at a time." Each piece has a story behind it, so each one is stylish and meaningful. My mom gave them to the women in our family for Christmas...what a cool mom! I've given them as gifts several times since, and everyone loves them. They are affordable and adorable.  Check out the website here to shop and learn more!

Selena Gomez has been spotted wearing several Dogeared necklaces, including Faith and Karma.

Dogeared has been seen in a variety of magazines, including Women's Health, Fitness Magazine and Sports Illustrated Swim Suit Issue.

Dogeared is on TV! The jewelry line has had guest appearances on New Girl, GCB, American Idol, and Parks and Recreation to name a few.

Here's my One in a Million necklace with the Bay Bridge...thanks Mama!

When I dream, I dream in neon

I am in to this trend. Maybe I'll regret it later, but right now, I'm drinking the kool-aid.  YUM!

The Simple Things In Life

Fresh flowers are so cheerful and always on trend! Every now and then I buy seasonal flowers to perk up our place. Jordan brought me these from the Farmer's Market, where they always have the most beautiful bouquets. I am looking forward to someday being able to bring in flowers from my yard. Anyone have pretty flowers in bloom in your yard? Show us some pictures!

Jergens Natural Glow and Protect

Today and tomorrow are my days off from work, and I'm crossing my fingers for some pool time. I'm fake tanned and SPF'd and ready for a day in the sun. I've tried many many fake tanners in my day, and can say I'm now a firm believer in Jergens Natural Glow and Protect. I was always a little reluctant to go for the Jergens because I'm very impatient, and usually go for tinted, more instant gratification self tanners. However, I saw that Jergens came out with a new version of their classic Natural Glow product, a version with SPF..woo hoo!! I decided to give it a chance because adding SPF is very noble of Jergens. Well, I love it! Give yourself a good week to really get a good glow, but then you'll be loving your new bronzed life. It looks very natural, doesn't streak, and is a great moisturizer. Plus you'll be rewarded for tanning by getting a daily dose of all over SPF. Today was hit or miss pool weather, but tomorrow I'll be taking my bronzed and protected bikini bod poolside. Thank you, Jergens, for your patience. You win, I'm a believer.
